After Bangladesh, on a somewhat parallel motif I have been trying to follow the events unfolding in the UK. Several cities have had rioting, essentially the white working class being pitted against the immigrants of colour- and more specifically of a certain religious dispensation. The specific incident that occurred was caused by the killing of three very little girls by a minority. As to how these types of atrocities are conceived, I will never know unless I go deep into the complexity of the human psyche. However, in this case the perpetrator was initially portrayed as a Muslim person by rumors on social media. Later it came to light that this was in fact not so. The chap had been born in Wales to parents of Rwandan origin. Unlikely, therefore, that this was the act of an Islamist. But what became evident is the now deep-seated angst of the white working class, much like the USA during the previous elections. This lot has been neglected completely by the elite in the UK. The e...

The situation in Bangladesh has really disturbed me. I am not a political person in the same vein as many of my classmates from college. However, the Prime Minister was ousted by an angry mob who claimed to be “oppressed” by the seemingly autocratic leader who had been in power for 15 years- and had also just won a re-election earlier in January. The fact is that I have no idea if she was an oppressor or not, however I do know that she was on the best of terms with the government of India and amongst all our neighbours, bangladesh was arguably the best relationship we enjoyed. Internally there was a consensus across parties in India on how we handled the Bangladesh relationship. However, the people in bangladesh were not pleased with her- also on account of her closeness with India. This is the disturbing part. The people of bangladesh, it seems to me by and large hate India. And I mean really hate India. They want to ban Indian products in their stores and the crowd in Banglades...

It looks like the much-awaited market may have started soon after my dim outlook regarding this matter, particularly for the next generation. I am already in losses- albeit my exposure is still limited as I have an inordinate amount of my investment in real estate. I somehow am not made for stock investing- whatever I touch turns to crap. I have tried different things- I have gone long in securities that are relatively simple like stocks, all the way to structured products and even alternatives like insurance-linked products. It does not matter. I always lose. While all sell-off is going on, I have instead spent a Sunday working on covering a Carpenter’s song on guitar and vocal. I liked what it sounded like, so I put some more effort into creating an entry for my channel. This is entry number 22-“Only Yesterday”- and somehow, while there are many ubiquitous Carpenters songs that everyone likes- this is the one song that stands out for me. Their biggest hits   ( Top of the W...

The Financial Markets as an institution of wealth building was so nebulous for me while growing up, that I never had the faintest idea that I would be a participant. Even when I learnt about it a bit, during the turn of the century- I had just started work and put some money in- only to lose it all. Over the last 20 years, the markets have evolved tremendously. The barriers to entry have gone down, they have been analysed to death by the finest eggheads, the choices and products on offer are mindboggling to the point that an entire industry has developed just to translate these to the consumers. The fact is that this simply akin to spending days at the races. If you back the right horse, you get value. How does one get wealthy? In three ways and three ways alone. The first is if you create value yourself ( as in pursue a succesful entrepreneurship), the second is if you rent out your inherent value (as in   traditional employment or “prostitution” or renting out an asset...

We have often heard of epochs in the past that seemed to be characterised as “Happy” or “Depressed”- as it was a somehow monolithic phenomenon across the world- no matter if you lived in India or Scandinavia. Now, thanks to the twin engine of Post world war II peacefulness, and technological progress, underpinned by the profit motive, what I realise is that the past 5 decades have created a sizeable community of people who have so much wealth that they live above a certain red-line wherein most if not all external and internal events whether geo – political, economical or indeed environmental fail to impact them adversely. They commentate and narrate about these events with a lot of charm and effulgence- propping them to further capitalise on their already safe standing. Think of podcasters, you tubers, neo-journalists and so on. The class of people that we refer to as Middle Class, on the other hand,   has been permanently sent to a state of disrepair from where there appears no...
